It stands in the middle of the forest. Near La Laiterie, home of Brandsport in the Ardennes. Upright. High. With a small platform about 7 metres high, the size of a paving stone.
“Just climb up” says Bart, an experienced instructor. “And then stand up”.
“Sure,” I think. I don’t back down and climb up. But then stand on that platform. That’s different cake. “Look straight ahead and focus on a tree,” Bart says again. It helps! Just like that, I get my trembling legs under control and stand proudly upright, albeit wobbly. At 7 metres high! On a paving stone! “Next!” And so it sounds 3 times. Because the idea is to stand on that paving stone with 4 people. And you can’t do that without helping each other. I won’t give away how.
But I will give away that this is a highlight of my daredevil career. What a feeling to overcome your own (height) fear, help other people in the process and finally do something you didn’t think possible: with 4 people on a paving stone at that height!
You probably now understand why this is called the hug pole. One of the most popular parts at a team building day or coaching day.
Experience it, you will never forget it.
